The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has confirmed that the closure date for the reconstruction of the intersection at Little Chicago Road and S.R. 38 will begin on May 9, 2011. Work will involve the construction of a new bridge over Sly Run; raising the elevation of the intersection by approximately 11 feet; and the construction of new left hand turn lanes, through lanes, and a traffic signal. The duration of the closure will be 150 days, which establishes the anticipated opening date near the middle of October, depending on weather. The official INDOT Detour will be S.R. 32 for S.R. 38. (INDOT has a policy of using State Roads for their own official detours.)
Additionally, the City of Noblesville will enter into a contract to construct the remaining four lane improvements on Little Chicago Road at the same time the intersection of S.R. 38 and Little Chicago Road is closed. The project is currently out for bid. The scope of the project involves the construction of sanitary sewer along Little Chicago Road; the construction of a roundabout at 191st Street and Little Chicago Road; and the construction of four travel lanes for approximately 1,200 feet north of 191st Street to match the proposed improvements at S.R. 38 and Little Chicago Road constructed by the Indiana Department of Transportation. The closure date and duration for the project at 191st Street and Little Chicago Road will match the closure for the project at S.R. 38 and Little Chicago Road for detour purposes. Local access will only be maintained from the south for the existing homes and the dentist office along Little Chicago Road. Mill Creek Road and Moontown Road will be used as the local detours.
The project is expected to improve the efficiency of intersection at S.R. 38 and Little Chicago Road. The current signal operates on 4 independent phases, moving only one direction at a time. The new signal will permit simultaneous movement for north-south and east-west traffic, which is not permitted by the current configuration.
