Retired Noblesville Firefighter Harold “Sandy” Lykes recently passed away at the age of 64. Lykes was hired as a fireman by the Noblesville Fire Department on November 1, 1977. He was severely injured during the Noblesville Ruppert Furniture Store fire on January 21, 1983.

Lykes suffered a skull fracture and the loss of an arm while fighting the fire. Despite several months of rehabilitation, Lykes was not able to return to work. He continued to serve the Noblesville community as a parking meter attendant from November 1983 to May 1988.

“I offer my condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Lykes family. As an NFD firefighter, Sandy was dedicated to the community in which he served,” said Mayor John Ditslear. “Sandy was tragically injured in the Noblesville Ruppert Furniture Store fire and it serves as a reminder of how dangerous the profession is for our public safety and first responder employees.”

Born August 3, 1953 in Long Branch, New Jersey, Lykes was the son of William E. and Typie E. (Graston) Lykes. He was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis. He began working helping his father in carpentering, then became a professional at painting homes. He loved being a fireman and on his days off, he and others in the department painted homes.

He was a former member of the Noblesville Moose Lodge. He was an avid I.U. fan and enjoyed competing in the game of darts and shuffle board. No public services are planned at this time.
